Description
Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is one of the largest residential universities in South Africa, offering accommodation to students at affordable rates. The university provides a diverse range of residences, each equipped with basic facilities such as laundry services, study rooms, and social lounges. Some residences also offer specialized facilities, making them unique from one another. Living in a TUT residence is not just about having a place to stay; it’s an opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds, engage in academic and cultural activities, and develop new skills.
The residences are designed to support students academically and personally. They offer mentorship programs, especially for first-year students, and organize various student life programs to cater to the out-of-class needs of residents. Security is a priority, with 24-hour security personnel on duty at all times. Additionally, some residences are equipped to accommodate students with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity for all.
To apply for residence accommodation at TUT, first-year students need to indicate their interest on the official admission application form. Selection is based on unconditional acceptance for a full-time academic program, and if there are too many applicants, further selection may be based on the date of acceptance. Returning students must apply online by the end of October each year. They can do this through their Student iEnabler accounts or by visiting the TUT website. The criteria for returning students include achieving a minimum academic average of 50% (55% for senior residences), not exceeding the maximum allowed years of residence, and being registered for at least two subjects.
For both first-year and returning students, admission to a residence is not guaranteed and depends on availability. It is advisable for students to apply early, as only a portion of TUT students can be accommodated in the residences. The university emphasizes that residing in a TUT residence is a privilege and requires residents to respect their environment and fellow residents.
