Description
Sophiatown, also known as Sof’town or Kofifi, is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa with a rich history as a multi-racial area and a vibrant black cultural hub. Originally part of the Waterfall farm, it was purchased by Hermann Tobiansky in 1897 and named after his wife, Sophia.
Sophiatown differed from other townships in South Africa because black people were allowed to own land there. The houses reflected the diversity of its residents, built according to their means, tastes, and cultural backgrounds. This led to a unique community where people of all races could live and do business together in the early 20th century
