Description
Kingsway Campus, also known as Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, is the largest and most populated campus of the University of Johannesburg. It is located in the suburb of Rossmore, Johannesburg, South Africa. The campus is situated near Kingsway Avenue, which runs along its north-east side. It serves as the administrative and governance hub of the university.
The campus was originally part of the Rand Afrikaans University before it merged with other institutions to form the University of Johannesburg in 2005. Its unique architectural design features a large, interconnected building that allows students to easily access various facilities within a short walking distance. This design has been both praised and criticized, with some calling it a masterpiece of Brutalist architecture.
Kingsway Campus offers a wide range of facilities and amenities to support student life. It includes 66 lecture halls with over 7,800 seats, as well as 24-hour access to microlaboratories. The campus is home to the Sanlam Auditorium, which hosts concerts, conferences, and graduation ceremonies. Additionally, there is an Arts Centre with a theatre and art gallery, providing a vibrant cultural environment for students and the community.
The campus also features a shopping center known as Campus Square, which serves both students and the local community. Student residences are available, and the campus has a unique day house policy that encourages social interaction among students. The University of Johannesburg operates a shuttle service connecting Kingsway Campus with other campuses, and it is also accessible via the Rea Vaya bus rapid transit system.
