Barnato Hall is a student residence located at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is designed for undergraduate students up to the age of 24. The residence offers both self-catering and catering options, providing flexibility for students. Barnato Hall houses 554 students in single rooms, ensuring each student has their own space.
Barnato Hall is well-equipped with various amenities to support student life. These include 24/7 security, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, communal bathrooms, a tuck shop, a computer lab, a study room, and a beautifully manicured garden with a pond. Additionally, students have access to a modern squash court, gym, and sports fields. The residence also offers a free Wits bus service to nearby campuses and weekend buses to the Rosebank shopping mall.
Barnato Hall is situated at 65 Empire Road, Parktown, Johannesburg. Its location provides easy access to the university’s main facilities and services. The residence is surrounded by a serene environment, which includes a pond and well-manicured gardens. This setting helps create a peaceful and conducive study environment for students.
The recent extension of Barnato Hall, designed by 26’10 south Architects, added over 150 new rooms. This expansion was done while integrating with the existing building’s infrastructure, providing a cost-effective solution to the national shortage of student accommodation. The design incorporates open walkways and courtyards, enhancing the overall living experience for students. The use of local materials and a unique brick façade adds to the residence’s aesthetic appeal, blending with the existing architecture while celebrating diversity.
